Day #3: Choose a piece of canon that you love.
I'm venturing outside of the Captain America fandom and switching back to Sherlock Holmes. Not my first fandom (See: Torchwood a la 2006-2009) but something I hold dear to my heart. I fell in love with the stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle during High School. They got me through some things, and provided a really healthy way of escapism without turning to anything dangerous.
When reading the stories you read that the elusive detective, from Doctor Watson, that he has taken up beekeeping.
The most famous (fictional) detective chose to work with bees. Bees.
Why bees?
Miller's adaption (Elementary - CBS) and McKellen's adaption (Mr. Holmes - 2015 film) I think provide the best support for as to why. They both have Holmes taking care of bees, and even solve crimes around them, but both adaptions allow for Holmes not to be this robot and a human who cares for something (other than Watson).
Bees are methodical creatures who can problem solve. Bees have a clear and concise job and get it done every day to support the Queen. Bees serve a huge purpose in keeping the planet alive with pollination and a very clear way of protection.
Bees are like Sherlock Holmes. They can both problem solve, have a concise idea what they want to get done to help serve, and make sure that things are done. Holmes did drugs, he stayed up late solving cases - he didn't take care of himself. The idea of Holmes taking care of bees, is the notion that he's finally relaxing - finally taking care of himself.
...and I think that's why I love that Sherlock Holmes is a beekeeper.

Date: 2019-01-04 03:26 pm (UTC)I really like this -- I have been a Sherlock Holmes fan since late grade school when they were the first grownup books I read, though I"m not active in Sherlock or any of the other Holmes-based fandoms. And yet, I never really thought about bees -- and you've made it very clear!
